Solar Energy and the COVID-19 Crisis

Solar Energy COVID-19 crisis

We know you’re getting a flood of emails talking about the policies and plans of various organizations and businesses as everyone tries to cope with the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. Although we hate to add to the deluge, it’s time for our monthly message anyway … and we always love to talk about solar!

As the stock market flounders, many of us are concerned with our investments and retirement funds. In these uncertain financial times, investing in solar on your home or business is one of the best investments you can make. As long as the sun keeps shining and you use energy, solar will earn an excellent return for you, with no stock market risk. With the savings on their power bills, most of our residential clients see a consistent 10-12% return on their investment. The fact that a solar energy system increases the value of your home is just the gravy on top.

If you’re interested in installing a solar power system on your home or business but you’re concerned about spending cash in these uncertain times, there is PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) financing available for most clients for solar projects. PACE financing comes in the form of a tax assessment levied by the local government taxing authority – funding is repaid through this assessment included on one’s annual property tax bill, spread out for up to 30 years. We work with PACE providers ReNew Financial and YGrene.

This is also a great time to talk about grid resiliency and how distributed solar improves grid resiliency. Battery backup systems help even more (although we certainly don’t expect that COVID-19 will cause a grid outage).

Beyond these considerations, we want to assure Brilliant Harvest clients (and clients-to-be) that we and our technicians are being safe and responsible. While there’s not a lot of viral risk up on rooftops, we are urging employees to follow CDC recommendations in their personal lives, keeping a safe space between ourselves and clients, following handwashing and other hygiene recommendations, and requiring employees who feel unwell to stay home.

In the meantime, we do not foresee any major impacts to our operations. We have sufficient supplies on hand for our scheduled projects and expect our timelines to remain in effect. We are relieved to say that it’s business as usual at Brilliant Harvest – we remain focused on our mission of saving the world, one rooftop at a time!

Do not hesitate to call us if you have any questions about your system – or would like to inquire about a new installation. Wishing you safety and health in the coming weeks and months!
